I began hand sewing doll clothes and stitching needlepoint at 8 years old. My mother was an exacting teacher. At the time, it was frustrating; but now, I am grateful. I understand quality of workmanship and product.
I attended my first Pow-Wow at 12 years old. I witnessed a small give-away. I realized that I needed to understand what I saw there. I read everything that I could get my hands on. I learned to sing my first Indian song at that time.
It is because of the Pow-Wow experience that I decided to learn to quilt. I started quilting at 18 years old because I wanted to learn to make Star Quilts. I had learned that Star Quilts are an auspicious gift to give and receive among so many Native American people.
I sought a teacher who could teach me to make Star Quilts. Instead, I received very good advice – you should start with a simpler quilt. I was 18 years old and not to be dissuaded; I taught myself.
Later, I broadened my quilt making interest. After about 100 Star Quilts, I attempted a Double Irish Chain; this went well. It is a simple quilt using only squares. I decided to try a quilt with triangles in it. It took me 20 years to teach myself to make a Half-Square-Triangle that did not shrink.
I am now a member of the Berlin Sisters in Quilting chapter of the Greater Hartford Quilt Guild. Membership has given me inspiration and skill.
There are so many beautiful quilts; I can fill my days with the infinite possibilities even if I had restricted myself to squares, rectangles and half-square-triangles.
Our site is intended to include Quilting, Native American Culture and Cooking. I married the cook in 1990. We gave birth to an awesome daughter in 1994. She is growing with interests of her own – none of them include needlework. She is more like her dad; she likes to work in the kitchen and produce a delicious and attractive plate.
